Directions
(From M25 Junction 8) Descend to Reigate on A217. Go clockwise round the one-way system, taking A25 in direction of Dorking. Jolly Farmers is on left, about 2.2 miles from Reigate.
(From Tadworth) Follow B2032 along Dorking Road. Descend Pebble Coombe and go over level crossing to A25. Left towards Reigate. Jolly Farmers is about 1.2 miles along on right.
(From Dorking) Follow A25 towards Reigate. Jolly Farmers is about 3.8 miles along on right.

Public Transport
The nearest station is Betchworth (about 1.5 miles walk to the Jolly Farmers) but not many trains on a Sunday. Best is Reigate station, from which it is a 2.2 mile taxi ride to the Jolly Farmers.

Walk Information
Despite its name the Jolly Farmers Food Emporium does have a bar area where you can drink without eating. The beer is T.E.A. on hand-pump. Booking essential for those taking lunch. Ring them on 01737 221355 as early as possible. There is outside seating and an ample car park. There are also an in-house farm shop and a café, both of which are open on Sunday

Starter Clues

Stage 1

Leaving "The Jolly Farmers" turn right along pavement. Very soon take "Public Footpath" on right along driveway. At "Yaverland Cottage" right along trackway to stile beyond gate visible ahead. With fence on right go straight on to next stile. Proceed to nearby double pointer "Public Footpath" post. Here veer sharp right. Follow path along edge of field, keeping wire fence on right. End stage at "Public Footpath" disc on right at point where wide break in fence occurs.

Stage 2

Ahead along edge of field to corner. Through kiss-gate here and follow track for a short way to a T. Take track to right here, at first with stream on right. Soon follow track round to left and stay on it through farm. At far side keep straight on, immediately passing three way pointer post on left. Soon pass "Fourpenny Cottage" and proceed to another three way pointer post just past on left.

Is really quite ambivalent.

(g) Bad back? It's no wonder at all.
Just the place to have a fall.

(h) This little lady, judged by her stance,
Gives the place an admiring glance.

Stage 3

Ahead on roadway. After passing "Pilgrim Cottage" follow roadway round to right. Continue until nearing bus shelter which appears in front. Now bear right, walking next to "Hair Salon" and village stores. Continue to large "40" sign beside main road.

(i) Up to monkey business……….

(k) Touting for business is all very well,
But the backing for these is simply a shell.

Stage 4

Cross straight over, keeping ahead on narrow path opposite, with hedge on left and village green on right. At roadway left for about 20 yards, then take roadway off to right, immediately passing "The Old School" on left. Very soon continue ahead along "Slough Lane". When gate to "Slough House" bars the way take "Public Footpath" via side gate on right. Follow path beside brick wall on left, then pass house and garden. Now keep ahead on grassy path across field. Soon climb stile and stay on path until reaching second stile. Over this and step onto road.

Stage 5

Right. After passing tennis court continue for a short way to stile with "H" plate on left. Over stile. Now continue straight ahead for about 60 to 70 yards until meeting fence opposite. At fence turn left, soon following it round curve to the right. Stay with fence until level with large red-roofed house away to left. Now veer diagonally left, making for large, solitary tree. At tree continue in same direction to large stile beside railway. Cross railway and immediately turn sharp right, keeping fence and railway on right. At corner of field climb next stile and follow narrow path to another stile near bridge.

Stage 6

Over stile. Right under bridge. At far side over stile on left and follow path up slope. At top ahead with railway on left until reaching next stile. Over this and turn right into field, keeping wire fence on right. Eventually, after passing trough, keep paling fence on right to nearby stile. Over this, go diagonally left across loose stone driveway and proceed to wooden kiss-gate visible in front.

(r) For the number once close to divinity
The answer comes to infinity.

Stage 7 (No answers on underlined section)

Through kiss-gate and head up path in front. Stay on path through a combination of (kiss) gates and a stile. Eventually pass "Buckland Edge" and continue to stile at road. Right to main road. Right here along pavement. Quite soon cross over to "Little Buckland Corner" opposite. Now, leaving main road, head along roadway here, which soon becomes a track. Not far past "No Parking" notice leave track and take narrow path off to right. Soon at X tracks keep straight over on narrow path. Shortly end stage at new-looking "Public Footpath" pointer in front.

Stage 8

Turn left along "Public Footpath". Stay on narrow path to stile some way ahead. Over stile, bear right and follow path with hedgerow on right. When hedgerow swings right keep straight ahead to gate visible in distance. Soon walk above stream and reach gate. Over stile beside it, then follow path keeping fence on left. At next stile keep straight ahead past house on right to nearby T. Here left along narrow road. At main road turn left back to pub. End stage at telegraph pole marked "1B".
