Location:
(Approaching from M25 Junction 4) After exiting at Junction 4 proceed on dual carriageway to first roundabout. Take second exit to Halstead and Knockholt Station. At junction turn left to Halstead. Soon turn right, still making for Halstead. Drive through Halstead, eventually reach T-junction with Give Way sign. Turn left into Main Road. Ignoring turn-offs to the left continue for about one mile until The Crown appears on left.
(Approaching from Croydon/Purley area) You’ll need a map! Get onto the B269 and continue south-east through Warlingham. Eventually pick up B2024. Quite soon branch off left into Church Hill. At Hawley’s Corner cross straight over A233 into Grays Road and continue to end. Left, then quickly right. Keep ahead on road until The Crown appears on right.

Public Transport:
There is a Sunday train service to Knockholt (via Orpington) from London Bridge/Charing Cross. Trains depart from London Bridge at 10.50, 11.50 and 12.50, arriving about 35 minutes later. No connecting buses on a Sunday, so book taxi (at least 24 hours in advance) by ringing Jason Cars on 01689 826666. Sunday fare about £10 for the four mile trip. There is a train back at 17.50 and another one (the last one) at 18.50. Ring South Eastern Trains on 0870 603 04 05 to check trains are running OK.

Walk Information:
With a mixture of enchanting woodland and scenic views from the North Downs Way, Mostly flat, No steep hills, Plenty of stiles.
The Pub, Excellent Adnams beer on hand pump. Reasonably priced hot and cold menu. (Do book if intending to eat – ring 01959 532142). Pub garden with kids’ play area.

STAGE I
Leaving pub cross road and turn left along pavement. Soon pass “Shelley’s Lane” on right. When pavement ends continue on right-hand side to signpost at fork. Ignoring “Brasted Lane”, continue on right-hand side to nearby “Public Footpath” pointer marked “Z816” on right. Take this footpath into field with hedgerow on left at first. Soon follow line of young oak trees on right to fence in front. At fence veer to left and take path into woods. Eventually follow path along a section bounded by wire mesh fences. End stage when fences end.
 4. An oxymoron here is plain.

STAGE II
Stay on path through woods, soon following it downhill to stile at bottom. Climb over, turn left and follow path with fence on left. Quite soon veer away from fence and climb uphill with path. Now re-enter woods and soon take two stiles in quick succession. Proceed through field towards building in front. Climb last stile and reach road.

STAGE III
Cross over and turn left. Stay on right-hand side until veering off left at triangular green to nearby “Give Way” sign at road junction. Cross over, turn left and proceed to “Stoneings Lane” on right.

STAGE IV
Right into this lane and follow road past “Paddock Wood Farm” and “Hallett Wood Farm House” to two-way “Public Footpath” pointer on right at bend. Veer off right along wide track beneath trees. Ignoring openings on left keep ahead on track to stile. Over this and continue straight ahead, keeping hedgerow on left through uneven field. End stage after climbing next stile and stepping onto road.

STAGE V
Cross over, turn left and continue on road to two no speed limit signs. Here take stile on left and keep hedgerow on left to next stile and road. Straight over and climb stile opposite. Keep hedgerow and tree-line on left. End stage after climbing next stile.

If topsy-turvy.
18. Regurgitated again and again
Second-rate actor won’t get acclaim
19. Arithmetic progression (with one on far side)
Results in a place known countywide.

STAGE VI
Keep straight on with hedgerow and road on left, bypassing one stile and then another. Almost immediately, at point where road veers off to left, climb stile in front, walk into next field and turn right along path. With hedgerow on right, skirt field for some distance. Eventually end stage at post on right with many pointers.

STAGE VII
Turn left, staying on “North Downs Way”. Soon, at corner of field, walk ahead for a few yards then turn right through gap between hedgerows, still on “North Downs Way”. Follow track until reaching post with several pointers. Take track to left. Soon, at next post with pointers, veer off diagonally right across field. Maintain direction without deviating and reach stile in hedgerow at far side of field. Climb over and continue across next field to pub visible in front. Over stile at back of pub. End stage immediately on reaching car park.
