Location:
Headley is just to the south of M25, east of Leatherhead. Take Junction 9 from motorway and follow A243 south (signposted Dorking). At roundabout with A24 (from Epsom & Ashtead) stay with Leatherhead bypass (signposted Dorking). Soon turn left into Headley Road (a narrow road, pretty and lined with trees). After about 1½ miles, turn right at T-junction. The Cock (horse) is about ½ mile on left.

Public Transport:
Leatherhead is well served with trains and busses. Headley is about 2½ miles to the eastand might be more difficult.

STARTERS

STAGE I
Through lychgate into churchyard, right for a few yards, then follow path round to the left. Soon leave churchyard via kissing gate and turn right along path between fences. Soon descend to metal gate with broken stile. Keep ahead, descending through field to another gate and stile. Climb stile and go straight over X tracks here along track in front. Soon climb next stile beside gate and follow path ahead across field. End stage after climbing next stile.

STAGE II
Cross driveway, step over broken stile opposite and follow uphill path through field. At top climb next stile and follow path through field. At corner over stile into next field and turn immediately left, keeping fence on left. Soon climb next stile in corner and go ahead to another nearby. Climb this, step onto track below and turn right uphill towards farm buildings. Soon ignore approach to buildings and instead veer left along grassy area, keeping wire fence on left. Soon, when "Public Footpath" disc appears on post on left, veer right across track here to nearby stile.

STAGE III
Over stile and follow path along top of field. Eventually, at corner of field, skirt round to left and proceed downhill towards pylon. Pass pylon and continue down to copse at bottom. Here follow track uphill through copse. End stage at "Public Footpath" pointer on left.

STAGE IV
Do hairpin right turn along "Public Bridleway". On reaching T in path turn right along upward-sloping path. Continue for some distance to "National Trust" notice marked "Headley Heath" at fork.

STAGE V
Take left fork. Soon, immediately after passing "White Lodge", step onto driveway and turn right. At nearby fork bear left and continue past pavilion and cricket pitch on left. On nearing main road keep grassy triangle on left and reach 3-way signpost nearby. Cross main road here and continue ahead along right-hand side of "Leech Lane". Shortly. when "Max Speed 20" appears opposite. cross over and head along "Public Bridleway". After passing "Heath House" end stage when flint-stone wall on right ends.

STAGE VI
Ahead, soon following driveway over X tracks. When driveway ends just past "Garden Cottage" stay on main track, keeping round to right with hedge. Soon pass large house on right and then bear right along wide track merging from the left. After about 25 yards veer off right along narrow path, keeping fence on right. Eventually, on reaching wide track at right angles, turn right and follow track downhill. After passing iron gate at driveway on right follow main track round to left. End stage at main road.

STAGE VII
Cross over and head up "Tumber Street" opposite. On reaching narrow road on right, turn right up this and continue past houses to main road at bend. Left, then almost immediately left again along "Public Footpath" beside "Ash House". Stay on this footpath without deviating. End stage immediately on reaching main road (with pub opposite).
23. From the one to the other it's a short walk to take
But demotion follows in its wake.
